Nature - Music smart

Naturalist Intelligence:
Nature smart

When Annita Rodick was 10, she read a book about the holocaust and started to take an interest in human rights. The Body shop says, Our values are our DNA and govern all that we do, from reducing our carbon footprint to ordering our envelopes. To us, there is no other way to work. After all, when you believe in what you do, you do it better.

Naturalist intelligence is the ability to recognize and classify the flora and fauna of an environment. Children who are Nature smart are nature lovers and would rather be hiking or collecting rocks or flowers than being cooped up in school. If school work involves studying snakes, frogs, stars or dinosaurs, they are highly motivated. These children may also become very strong environment advocates who are concerned about good stewardship of Mother Earth and addressing ecological problems.

1. Cultivate a Garden:
the best way to support your nature smart entrepreneur is to create a living classroom in your backyard. Children can choose to cultivate an herb garden, vegetable garden, flower garden or healing garden, researching on appropriate plants for your environment. Discuss the responsibilities involved in caring for the garden and visit model gardens for inspiration. If you have a young child, you can start with caring for a plant first. At the Multiple intelligence School, we discovered that many children did not want to eat vegetables because they were unfamiliar with them. They also did not know all the vegetables in the traditional Filipino folksong, “Bahay Kubo”, so we cultivate a “Bahay Kubo” garden and the children cooked these vegetables and started to enjoy many of our native vegetables. A good parent child project is to plant an edible garden and involve the children in cooking the harvest. This will help your Nature Smart child explore several career option ranging from agriculture, botany to culinary arts.

2. Care for a pet:
Nature Smart children want to care for a pet, whether it is a dog, cat fish or hamster. They experience the same excitement when they catch a spider or grasshopper that they chance upon in the garden. Support their curiosity by buying them books on animals. You might be surprised by just how much they know about animals that interest them. Teenagers can benefit from taking on the responsibility of caring for a dog as it will prepare them to care others in their adult lives. The interest in animals can open doors for future veterinarians, farmers, breeders and pet shop owners.

3. Reduce, reuse and recycle at home:
Model a green lifestyle for future “green entrepreneurs”. Involve your child in a conscious effort to reduce, reuse and recycle at home. Environmental concerns and issues have opened a whole new range of entrepreneurial possibilities for the next generation. Inspire your child by talking about issues and solutions that you can actively do at home to reduce consumption of electricity and water. Educate your child about environmental issues and show how simple actions, use of innovative green products and a sustainable lifestyle can help the environment.
