What will i need to start?
A suckling pig, your own recipe for the marinade, a bamboo skewer, wood for roasting, and some backyard space for your pit. (Joan Pascua operation manager of a freight forwarding company, says she invested P50,000 to start this backyard business)

Who will my customer be?
Everyone who loves lechon

How much should i charge?
P250 a kilo or P4,500 to P5,000 for a whole roast pig weighing 13 to 14 kilo. The heavier the pic, the higher the price.

How much will i make?
If you butcher the pig your self, expect to take home 20 to 30 percent of its selling price. a slaughterhouse will eat up to 5 to 10 percent of your earnings.

Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal responsibility should be introduced to children so that they can start keeping records of how much they have, how much they spent and how much they saved. They need to feel responsible for what they do with their money. Exposing children to this concept with help them make smart money choices and avoid overspending.

The discipline to be aware of how money is used through keeping records in difficult to develop. I myself have a hard time managing my receipts so that I can balance my spending. Because of my personal difficulty in this area, I have become conscious about teaching my kids about it. At the very least, I ask them to show me the receipts fo the money I give them.

One consequence of not keeping records is overspending. We need to give kids opportunities to manage their money wisely in small way.

Spending and allowances

Spending Diary

Ask your child to keep a record of how he spends his allowance. Explain that all expenses should fall within a total budget. Vary the exercise depending on age. For young kids, it can just be a list of all the things they spent on and the amount. For older kids, it can be in a credit/debit format (explain the language) with attached receipts.

Responsible Consumerism

Money smart kids are smart consumers. They try to get as much value as possible from their money. I watched with pride how the high school girls in our prom committee took to heart heir commitment to mount an expensive looking prom on a shoestring budget. They searched for suppliers, went to Dapitan Market and Divisoria get the best bargains. They were able to easily cut their budget for decoration in half.

If we don’t watch out, we will raise our children to become passive consumers. We buy their clothes, books, gadgets and things without their active participation. Choice is key to helping our kids going an understanding of responsible consumerism.

When shopping for an item, practice comparison shopping, by checking out at least three options for the item to train your child to choose the best option.

Do this when buying their school supplies and clothes. You will be surprised by how quickly they realize that certain brands are more expensive than others, even if they are not necessarily better.

As they become more responsible consumers, they will be able to evaluate products better.

Comparison shopping

Take your child on a comparison shopping trip. Choose a store that your child frequents. Go grocery shopping if he likes food, clothes shopping if he’s into fashion or go to a bookstore if he’s a bookworm. Shop for a specific thing, like jeans. Bring a small index card with columns: brand name and price. Have fun comparing brands and prices before coming up with the best purchase.
